Swollen lymph nodes in the armpit area of 16-year old Adam Cherrix will necessitate another round of radiation, according to an article in today’s Virginian-Pilot. The teen, if you recall, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and was involved in a court case in which he was allowed an alternative treatment rather than another round of chemotherapy.
As one would expect, the whole ordeal has taken a tremendous toll on the family. The article points out that Cherrix’s parents have separated. His last round of radiation took place in Mississippi but going back there for an extended stay would be too expensive and a hardship on the family, which includes four younger children.
I still support the right of the family to make their own medical decisions in this case but I have to wonder if the price they have paid in doing so has been higher than they anticipated.
