Delegate Brian Moran (D-46) has introduced legislation that would curb the number of out-of-state PACs using Virginia’s lax campaign finance laws. HB2852 would require that the primary purpose of the PACs be to influence non-federal elections in Virginia.
According to this article, Virginia is only one of five states that puts no limits on campaign contributions and its proximity to Washington DC makes it a favorite place for candidates to register their PACs. It is also favored by unions and other special interest groups.
“People try to skirt their own states’ laws and national campaign laws and they use Virginia’s laws. Our laws are made for Virginia and it should be limited to Virginians,” said Moran, D-Alexandria.
I agree. Close the loophole.
