According to the Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim will be announcing a “significant reduction” in the real estate tax rate at tomorrow’s State of the City Address.
The remarks were made in conjunction with a hearing on SB899, a bill sponsored by Nick Rerras (R-6th), which the Pilot reports was tabled yesterday. This bill would have put a cap of 5% on the increase in real estate values, which would require a change to the City Charter. Such a change was not requested by Norfolk Council and has been the source of a bit of contention between council and Rerras.
I got my own assessment notice this week, which I plan to appeal. While the rate of increase is not as significant as prior years, I think the assessment exceeds FMV. I managed to get it lowered last year, using the same argument.
I will be at the SOTC address and will report back.
