The Quiz

Another fun thing I received via email.

The Quiz

This is a quiz for people who know everything! I found out in a hurry that I didn’t. These are not trick questions. They are straight questions with straight answers.

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.
2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?
4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?
5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn’t been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?
6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters ” dw” an d they are all common words. Name two of them.
7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?
8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.
9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter “S.”

So, whadda ya think? I’ll post the answers later πŸ˜‰

  1. My answers: (I’m pretty sure I’m right on most of them). My friend actually pulled the second question on me the other day, so I got lucky on that one!

    1. Boxing. If I am right about the sport, I think only the judges keep score, and it’s not revealed what the score was until the end. Of course, if there’s a KO, it doesn’t matter.
    2. Niagra Falls
    3. Rhubarb and Asparagus (is Spinach the third)?
    4. Strawberry
    5. They put the pear in the jar while it’s still small (or even a blossom), keep the jar over the pear with the pear still attached to the tree. When it’s fully grown, pull of the pear-in-the-bottle.
    6. Dwarf and Dwindle
    7. Period, Comma, Exclamation Mark, Question Mark, Colon, Semi-Colon, Hyphen, Apostrophe
    8. Got to admit, I have no idea.
    9. Shoes, Sandles, Socks, Skates, Slippers, Snowshoes

  2. 6. dwell (what about dweeb and Dwight? maybe they don’t count because its slang and a proper name)

    7. ellipsis, quotation marks, slash, dash, parens, brackets

    8. lettuce

  3. I think I’ve seen frozen radishes, and I’m nearly certain horse radish sauce disqualifies it (though I’ll confess I wouldn’t be surprised if horse radish doesn’t come from an actual radish). Lettuce is my guess.

I don’t know about the pear one. At no point in the question did it ever actually attest that the pear is smaller than the neck of the bottle. I would have to go to a liquor store to actually find a bottle of the brandy, and I don’t think they’re going to let me leave work to do that. πŸ™‚

    1. Boxing
    2. Niagara Falls (The rim is worn down about two and a half feet each year because of the millions of gallons of water that rush over it every minute.)
    3. Asparagus and rhubarb.
    4. Strawberry.
    5. It grew inside the bottle. (The bottles are placed over pear buds when they are small, and are wired in place on the tree. The bottle is left in place for the entire growing season. When the pears are ripe, they are snipped off at the stems.)

Has anyone ever seen frozen or canned bananas? I guess they get processed in baby food, though.

  6. I rarely find anything but the standards in ABC stores. Admittedly, I’m something of a snob (shocking, I know), but I think the selection of every ABC store I’ve been to in VA is pretty limited. I’ve always wondered what Virginians who didn’t live near other states do, when they want to buy a good bottle of something different.

  7. 1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

    Elections.

    2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

    Usually, Congress πŸ™‚
