NAACP President resigns

After only 19 months, Bruce S. Gordon has resigned as president of the NAACP. Gordon, who came to the civil rights organization after a corporate career, was never a good fit for the board.

Julian Bond, chairman of the board of the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said Sunday that Gordon tried to quit just six weeks after taking the job in August 2005, but Bond convinced him to stay.

Perhaps they should have let him go at that point. Gordon’s management style and vision obviously clashed with the desires of the unwieldy 64-member board. He wanted the organization, historically one of advocacy, to do more service work. Had they let him leave earlier, perhaps one of the other candidates would have still been available.

Instead, the search for a replacement begins anew. In the meantime, Dennis C. Hayes, the NAACP’s general counsel, will once again serve as interim president.

  1. If only we get the Virginia Beach NAACP president to resign maybe …just maybe some civil right issues would be addressed!
