American Idol boots Brandon

American Idol LogoBrandon Rogers, the back up singer, was voted off of American Idol tonight. For a guy with a decent voice, he chose a strange song. Actually, I knew all but one of the songs performed last night and while Brandon’s performance was among the weaker ones, it certainly wasn’t the worst. That honor belongs to Sanjaya, who somehow has dodged the bullet for another week. It didn’t help that Brandon forgot the words but come on – Sanjaya simply has a mediocre voice. After all, this is a singing competition, right?

By the way – I have to disagree that this contest is between Lakisha and Melinda. At this point, this contest is Lakisha’s to lose. She blew me away last night, demonstrating that she has tremendous control of the beautiful instrument that is her voice.

Oh – and is it really fair to have these contestants singing songs from the 1960s? I mean, it would be fair for an oldster like me, but these kids? Nah.

  1. This is no surprise…we have seen it time and again. The teen vote will go with Sanjaya because he is their rep, and I will be it carries him for at least another two weeks. Why do the votes keep coming? He’s cute and he got lots of exposure with the whole “they whacked my sister” storyline.

Remember JP Stevens, Kevin Covais, Jasmine Trias (who also had the hawaii time zone in her favor)? This is not the first time the cute youngster got carried beyond their talent expiration date…and it won’t be the last.

  2. You’re right about the 60s songs showing up the kids’ weaknesses. From Brandon to Phil to even the ladies, the old Motown songs just didn’t have the old snap, crackle and pop. The kids muddled the rhythm!

I did think Blake did a good job with rhythm in that ensemble song they did last night, though.
