Delegate McEachin Announces his Candidacy for Democratic Nomination for State Senate -Cites his Longstanding Advocacy for Democratic Values and His Opponent’s Active Support for George Allen
Richmond- Delegate A. Donald McEachin (D-Henrico) today announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the Ninth Senatorial District.
In his announcement, Delegate McEachin discussed his years of standing up for Democratic values, citing his bill this Session to increase the minimum wage. “I believe that working Virginians should and must be paid a living wage. As Democrats, we recognize that work is empowering and ennobling. We believe that work should also be enabling allowing people to be self-sufficient, to support their families, raise their children and care for their elders,” Delegate McEachin stated.
McEachin also mentioned both his bill to require insurance companies to cover the HPV vaccine for those women who choose to take it and his longstanding commitment to education. He discussed his support for Community College Transfer Grants and his efforts to acquire additional funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, “I believe that education is the great equalizer and that we must ensure affordable and accessible higher education to all those who wish to pursue it…For many years, my law firm has offered scholarships to students in our community so that they, too, can have the opportunity to meet their goals and then bring their newfound skills to help others.”
Delegate McEachin also expressed his shock and dismay at Senator Lambert’s endorsement and active campaigning for George Allen. “The same George Allen, who as a staunch supporter of President Bush, sanctioned his corrupt and failed policies, rather than standing up to them,” Delegate McEachin explained.
Delegate McEachin continued, “The most shocking moment was when [Senator Lambert] campaigned not only with George Allen but with President Bush. [He] went with Senator Allen and President Bush to a fundraiser to ensure not only the Senator’s re-election, but to guarantee continued Republican rule in the United States Congress.”
Delegate McEachin concluded, “I will continue to be out in the community, both before the primary and, if elected, as a strong, committed Democrat. I promise to always support the people I serve, our principles and our Party.”
