BREAKING: Weems files in the 83rd

It seems that poster Bullwinkle was right. I’m told that Carolyn Weems, Virginia Beach School Board member, has filed to run in the 83rd. I guess Leo Wardrup’s retirement announcement will be forthcoming.

In the May 2006 election, Weems was the top vote getter among those running at large, garnering more than 41% of the vote in a four-way race.

While she may be anointed by St. Leo, she appears to have some baggage. As I understand it, Weems, who resides in the Bayside HS district, rented an apartment in the Princess Anne HS district so that her son, now a college student, could attend Princess Anne HS and play baseball there.

More info as it comes in.

UPDATE: From the comments, Bullwinkle says “Robert Rummels has also filed paperwork and sent out a news release. So as of right now, there are two candidates.

UPDATE 2: BD has confirmed and has a copy of the Rummels press release.

UPDATE 3: PilotOnline has a story up. Still no word on Leo.

  1. This is one of the few times I have ever seen ‘breaking’ in the title of
one of your posts. (not a critique)

    Oh, and Howdy!

  2. I’ve edited the post to make it clear that the apartment was in the HS attendance zone, which is what I intended to say.

Mark – I figured it was worth the title 😉

Seems that there might just be a Republican primary if Rummels wants in. Goody, goody!

  3. Weems would be an interesting choice. Not neccessarily good, but not necessarily bad, either.

(Princess Anne HS is of course named after P A County, which ran from the Norfolk’s eartern limits up to what is today Great Neck Rd before the City of Virginia Beach was incorporated. The HS does indeed sit in what was once county land, so the name isn’t as confusing as one might otherwise think if they haven’t lived in Tidewater long enough. Fun bit of local history. :))

  4. Robert Rummels has also filed paperwork and sent out a news release. So as of right now, there are two candidates. Still . . . no official word from Leo.

  5. Weems seems scary to me. Her bio says she was a counselor at a Crisis Pregnancy Center (read: opponent of birth control and legal abortion). Just what we need in the legislature – another social extremist who opposes birth control!

  6. Just heard this morning that Rummels mother was just diagnosed with cancer and he may not be running. God’s healing to Roberts mom!

  7. Weems does not have the experience to run for office. On the upside I hope she wins it will make that much easier for a Democrate to take the seat!
