The IRS yesterday granted a six-month extension of time to file and pay for those affected by the Virginia Tech tragedy. The new deadline is October 15, 2007.
Today, Virginia Tax Commissioner Janie Bowen did the same for Virginia tax returns. The new filing and payment deadline is November 1.
Now this is the government looking out for folks. I am warm and fuzzy all over (and I mean it).
When the government wants to take care of us… this is the way to do it.
There’s an apt Benjamin Franklin quote lurking underneath this story that is nevertheless completely inappropriate for the situation at hand. I don’t know that this really qualifies as the government “taking care of people,” but just as in the case of the other deadline extensions automatically grantes (if you lived on the North Eastern seaboard, you automatically got a deadline extension until Thursday for any delays caused by this week’s storm), I appreciate that the IRS is being flexible for people who have to deal with events outside of their control.
