Lambert files:$100K loan

Benny Lambert’s financial report finally showed up on the SBE website today. The report shows $172K in cash on hand, of which $100K is a loan he made to the campaign on 3/30.

Now I understand investing in your own campaign, but putting $100K in at the last minute, especially when your 20 (!) contributors only gave $24K is just an attempt to make the numbers look better.

The answer, of course, is to help Donald McEachin get elected.

  1. Watkins Abbitt loaned himself $50,000 just before the deadline; another sign of a campaign in trouble?

He has around 600k in the bank, so it is not a big deal, but as you say, loaning yourself money to make it seem better is a dishonest and desperate thing to do. Abbitt would have raised only about $25k without the loan.

    Go Connie Brennan!!!

  2. McEachin raised less than $60k for the 4/15 deadline & $47k was transferred from his house race from 2006. I hear Lambert will make another large investment very soon.

  3. I really don’t get it. If people raise a lot of money, it is said they are beholden to special interests. If they don’t, they are said to have no support.

  4. anon – that’s not necessarily true. If people raise a lot of money from a wide variety of donors, no one says that. It’s one of the reasons folks were so surprised with Obama’s fundraising. The number of donors gives some hint as to how broad the support is. McEachin reported over 200 donors.

Otto – not sure what your point is. McEachin didn’t announce until March 27 – 4 days before the filing deadline. Not sure how he could have raised much money for his Senate run in such a short period of time.

  5. McEachin’s House campaign was raising money for most of March. He transferred most of that to his Senate campaign on the 27th, when he filed for the Senate primary. It’s perfectly legitimate, but you do have to read both the House and Senate campaign reports to see everything.

Of course, like all other General Assembly incumbents, McEachin was barred from raising money during the GA session, a little over half of the filing period. This is something to keep in mind when you’re pondering how well the challengers did.

  6. Donald made it known in certain circle thathe was running for Senate last summer. Some lobbyist were upset they were not told until he announced because they thought they were giving him $$ for his house seat because Fl Miles was going to run. His House fundraisers were cleary for his Senate run(which is okay by the way)
