Double standards

With both a woman and a black as serious contenders for the presidential nomination, it has been interesting to watch the inevitable double standards being applied.

In the case of Hillary Clinton, it has been obvious. After the so-called “debate,” the conversation about Hillary was about her “tone,” whether she came off as “shrill” and other such nonsense. The fact that she has chosen to drop “Rodham” from her official presidential campaign name (but not from her Senate name) is somehow “news.”

The media’s infatuation with Barack Obama has them treating him with kid gloves. He makes broad, sweeping statements with little substance to them but gets a pass. He’s often referred to as young, charismatic.

When it comes to selecting our next president, we should be holding all of the contenders to the same set of standards: whether they have the knowledge, experience and leadership abilities to govern our nation for the next four years.

Not only is this trivial, it is not even true. Somewhere Media Matters for America has documented that she ran as Hillary Clinton in 2006 and 2000.
