Former president Jimmy Carter has called on lawmakers to revisit the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the nation’s military. Carter made the statement to the Servicemember’s Legal Defense Network. Carter wrote:
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is the only law in America today that regulates a group of citizens then prohibits them from identifying themselves and speaking up on their own behalf.
The SLDN said:
There is a growing understanding that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ isn’t just bad public policy, but is also a blight on our country’s commitment to human rights and equal opportunity. SLDN welcomes President Carter, the first Nobel laureate to call for an end to this unconscionable discrimination within our own government, to the coalition of those working to lift the ban.

EDIT: FYI – Bill Richardson called for an end to DADT back in March.
Go, Jimmy. Best ex-President we’ve ever had.
Hillary Clinton has also called for an end to DADT.
All the EU countries allow gays to serve openly, I don’t know what our problem is.
Vivian… not sure where else to post this but in case you missed it, Carter SERIOUSLY blasts Bush’s record on international affairs and other topics: http://apnews.myway.com//article/20070519/D8P7O79O0.html
