Norfolk Drinking Liberally was great fun last night. The coolest part was hanging out with some young Dems that came over from the Peninsula (I’m not going to name names because as an oldster, I’ll probably leave somebody out 😦 ) Two of them were over 21 and two were under. One of them will turn 21 before our next gathering. I encouraged them to get involved in the campaigns on over there. And, yes, they are planning a Peninsula chapter of Drinking Liberally. 😉
Go ahead and put next month’s gathering on your calendar now. It will be Thursday, June 21, 5pm – 7pm at The New Belmont.

You won’t find me quoting former Moral Majority VP Cal Thomas often but this column was reprinted in the Virginian Pilot today. In it, Thomas says:
The flaw in the movement was the perception that the church had become an appendage to the Republican Party and one more special interest group to be pampered. If one examines the results of the Moral Majority’s agenda, little was accomplished in the political arena and much was lost in the spiritual realm, as many came to believe that to be a Christian meant you also must be “converted” to the Republican Party and adopt the Republican agenda and its tactics.
That’s quite an admission, in my opinion.

I saw this little piece in the People section of the Pilot the other day.
Celebrity humility?
Bruce Willis finally asks what’s been on every citizen’s mind for years: “Why do actors thing their opinions mean more because (they) act?”
Willis says he’s sick of celebrities who act like self-appointed experts on everything around the globe.
Bruce proved his point handily with, “Have you heard anything useful come out of an actor’s mouth lately?”
Well, have you?
I’m not sure that I’ve heard anything useful but actors do at least have a platform whereby what they say gets airtime. And if they use it wisely, they can make an impact. Kinda like what we bloggers try to do.

Lots and lots for D’s to do this weekend in Hampton Roads. The State Steering Committee meets this evening and the State Central Committee meets tomorrow morning. I’m told that these meetings are open to the public for observation, so if you want to see how the party works, this is a great opportunity. Also, tonight there will be a reception with Ward Armstrong and local candidates. That reception is free (donations gratefully accepted).
Immediately following the State Central Meeting will be the Women’s Caucus meeting, which is also open to the public. Members will be taking up the issue of the revised bylaws as well as the budget. Note that you will be able to join the Women’s Caucus by paying your dues prior to the meeting.
Mark Warner will be in town for a breakfast for Henry Light tomorrow morning. Details on that event can be found here. That event is also free.
On the Peninsula, Delegate Jeion Ward is hosting a townhall meeting tomorrow from 12:30pm to 2:30pm at the West Hampton Community Center, 1638 Briarfield Road.
Sunday, May 20, the local women’s group, The Truth Group, will meet at the Princess Anne Library at 3pm. The speaker will be candidate Bobby Mathieson.
