Continuing the series of op eds by candidates in the four local primaries, today’s Virginian Pilot presented those of Carolyn Weems and Chris Stolle, Republican candidates in Virginia Beach’s 83rd district. This seat is open due to the retirement of Leo Wardrup.
Unlike the first in the series, there appeared to be no specific question asked of the candidates. Instead, the candidates essentially made their pitch for support in the primary. Weems’ piece was written with the flap over Stolle’s residency in mind:
I am committed to participation as an informed voter in the electoral process at all levels of government. I have carried petitions, campaigned and worked the polls many times. I have voted in the 83rd District for municipal, state and national elections. In contrast, my opponent only registered to vote here in September 2006. Even though he and his family moved to Virginia Beach in 2000, he chose to remain a registered voter in Florida.

Simply put, I have worked, played, worshiped, volunteered, voted, paid taxes and served most of my adult life in the 83rd District. I have a strong track record of proven experience and conservative values.
Stolle chose to emphasize his credentials:
It was in the Navy where I learned to communicate, solve problems and make tough decisions under pressure. It was in the Navy where leadership was an absolute requirement, whether you were prepared for it or not. And it was in the Navy where I learned firsthand that there is no substitute for an individual’s character, honor or integrity. It is these qualities that make me the strongest candidate to be your delegate.

I believe that my military service, medical expertise and business background make me uniquely qualified to serve in the General Assembly. I’ve faced the true test of leadership as a naval officer. And as a husband, father, doctor and businessman, I understand the challenges that you and your family face every day.
The winner in this contest will face Democratic candidate Joe Bouchard in November’s general election.

Carolyn Weems just can’t seem to take a hint, can she?
Good thing for Weems that there are no Navy veterans, Navy spouses, Navy family members, Navy members, Navy friends, or Navy supporters voting in this district, huh? Oh, wait, you say that’s the majority of the voters? And Stolle didn’t just land here on an alien spaceship? He has family members here? Who knew?
Weems is clueless ….
