Saying that they only make primary endorsements in races that are essentially the general election, the Richmond Times today announced their picks in the following races:
- 72nd HOD (Republican) – Jimmie Massie. “Two pillars in our editorial creed state that we believe in limited government and fiscal conservatism. All three candidates meet the criteria, yet Massie offers the best fit.”
- 74th HOD (Democratic) – Floyd Miles. “A former member of the House, he knows his way around the legislature’s labyrinth. Miles offers the district a broad record of accomplishment from his former service, and has shown the ability to work across the aisle when it is in the best interests of his constituents.”
- 9th Senate (Democratic) – Benny Lambert. “McEachin has sought to cast this election as a rematch of last fall’s U.S. Senate contest, but this year’s race is too important to be fought over such base, irrelevant considerations.”
- 12th Senate (Republican) – no endorsement. “[Joe] Blackburn raises a question voters should take seriously… He [Walter Stosch] is a real Republican… Voters should follow their consciences.”
Hmm – seems to me that in the Republican primaries, the RTD endorsed Republicans and in the Democratic primaries they endorsed folks as close as possible to being Republicans. And the logic used to endorse Lambert – that he is a senior member of the legislature – was ignored in the 12th Senate district contest where Stosch is the Senate majority leader!
Come on, RTD. Your bias is showing! It is neither base nor irrelevant that a senior Democrat decided to endorse a Republican. As for The Donald’s “partisan lens,” this is, after all, a Democratic primary. How else is he supposed to view things?
Let’s empty the pumpkin patch. Help Don MacEachin today!
Does that answer your question from the podcast on who Floyd Miles is? (i.e. the Delegate until two years ago).
What they said:
“McEachin has sought to cast this election as a rematch of last fall’s U.S. Senate contest, but this year’s race is too important to be fought over such base, irrelevant considerations.”
What they really meant:
McEachin has sought to cast this election as a rematch of last fall’s U.S. Senate contest, but we supported George Allen in that Senate contest, so we support Benny Lambert.
This is the newspaper that only a few years ago had a story about black people wanting to go in the pool (the POOL!) with white people.
They will never, ever change. Thank God I don’t live in Richmond.
