Like lots of folks, I looked at campaign finance reports Tuesday morning. In particular, I checked out a number of the reports for local candidates. I immediately noticed that the report of Hank Giffin, Republican challenger in the 87th, was in error, along with a lot of the others. By late yesterday, I found that the report had been corrected. It now adds up 😉
One thing that appears to be missing, though, is anything information related to a scheduled fundraiser with AG Bob McDonnell. As you can see from the David Bailey Associates political events calendar , this event was supposed to be held April 26 at the Town Point Club.
So help me out here. Did the event not take place? I do see some checks on his contributions list that were dated on or about 4/26. But there are no expenses shown – either cash or in-kind. If the event didn’t take place, fine. But if it did, I guess another amendment is in order 😉

I heard the event took place. Maybe they don’t want to report the expense yet because it was a lot and it would take away from how much cash he has on hand.
Can anyone explain why the In-Kind Donations for Hank Giffin from the June and March reports add up to only $18,307.32, yet the aggregate to date amount on the June filing adds up to $70,014.96?
That’s probably what happened. Technically you don’t report the date you incurred the expense, but the date you actually paid it. They might simply be stiffing Town Point Club for the time being in order to pad their numbers.
Actually, there is a place for unpaid debts to be listed. If the event did take place and he has the bill, it should have been reported on Schedule F. There was no schedule F included with the report.
orfdem – where are you getting the $70K from? I saw the $18K
vjp: I understand the running tally now. I thought the aggregate were the totals. I looked at it fast and didn’t notice the running total.
$5457 for a phone survey: I wonder if this was the one that did not mention any candidates and just asked about issues? It said it was paid for by the House Republican Caucus. It specifically mentioned the Norfolk Tea Party’s $1.08 in 08′ and the Republicans Transportation Plan supported by Tim Kaine.
If this was the survey, seems like a lot of money to spend without mentioning the candidates name.
one more thing? Did you see that Giffin’s campaign reimbursed his wife (Stevie Giffin) $84 for transportation to the State Board of Elections Class?
It’s been a while since I looked over the state filing forms (for all I know they’ve changed, but unlikely). My recollection is that the unpaid debts section pertains to loans received by the committee and not unpaid bills–that’s the way it works on Federal forms. If it is unpaid bills, they may claim they didn’t receive said bill until the books closed on the quarter.
