Support for Jefferson? Say it ain’t so!

I’m nearly speechless:

Supporters of a Democratic congressman charged with bribery and money laundering harkened to their civil rights days on Wednesday as they denounced the allegations against U.S. Rep. William Jefferson.

The group, including ministers and the president of the local chapter of the NAACP, alleged the 16-count corruption indictment was the work of a Republican White House and Justice Department scheming to target black Democratic leaders and shift attention from legal troubles of Republican congressmen.

You know, sometimes it really isn’t about race. The indictment of William “Dollar Bill” Jefferson is one of those cases. The guy was videotaped taking $100,000! This isn’t made up, this isn’t a part of the “vast right wing conspiracy.” The guy’s a crook.

And yes, OJ was guilty.

Step away from the KoolAid, folks.

  1. Vivian — I heard his press conference where he claimed that the FBI gave him the money, so that he could in turn give it to some Nigerians in a sting operation. This is sort of like Congressman Myers’ defense in Abscam 25 years ago. There’s nothing new under the sun, I guess. Either that, or the “I was playing golf in the backyard” defense was already taken.

  2. If they’re trying to shift attention from the legal troubles of Republican congressmen, this preposterous stance will sure help that effort along.

  3. You are correct. Sometimes it is not about race, but it seems to always be a “defense”. Just like the Verbena Askew pastors, etc. who sprang to her defense. To them everthing is about race. Jefferson is just a criminal. His race is neither the cause nor is it a defense.

  4. The supporters of Jefferson are doing the cause for fair and impartial administration of justice a tremendous disservice by coming to the defense of someone who has as much evidence against him as Jefferson. By making it about race and not about fundamental fairness and justice they are saying that any behavior by an African American politician goes. Bunch of idiots.
