When I first heard that Senator Nick Rerras had appropriated the blue crab of challenger Ralph Northam, I needed to see it for myself. Because I live the 6th, I get Rerras’ mailings all the time. However, since this dinner was being held on the Eastern Shore, I didn’t get the invitation. So I asked around and finally got my hands on a copy, albeit not in color. But others saw the original and were as outraged as I.
Rerras has represented the district since 1999 and I’ve lived here the whole time. I can’t ever remember him using the blue crab as a part of his logo.
Ralph, on the other hand, has used the logo since the beginning of his campaign and it is prominently displayed on his website. And, after all, Ralph is from the Eastern Shore. The blue crab choice as a logo for him is a natural one.
Rerras’ taking of the logo is inexcusable, even if it is not unexpected. After all, he’s claiming credit for Virginia being named the best managed state. Whatcha wanna bet Mark Warner & Tim Kaine might disagree with him on that?

Oh, here’s something voters really care about. Who should use a crab logo?
Are Democrats that empty on the platform?
It’s just another example of how brain dead the candidate and the campaign are.
If Rerras can become dominant enough with the logo so that voters associate the crab with him instead of Northam, good for him. Otherwise, everytime the crab shows up, they’re going to associate Rerras with Northam, which isn’t a good idea for him. Not only does he suck at politics, he also sucks at marketing.
Accomplishments While in Office:
Nick Rerras, a computer guy, finally managed to get his website back up. What took him so long?
Nick Rerras called a female attorney/candidate for a judgeship and/or opponents of domestic violence “the FemiNazis,” a term even Rush Limbaugh has reportedly sworn off.
Nick Rerras reportedly speculated that the mentally ill are possessed by “demons,” and that the parents of mentally ill children are being “punished by God.” In light of recent events, can we afford to have ANYONE in public office who is so ignorant of mental health issues and the urgent need to improve our treatment of the mentally ill?
Nick’s real accomplishment is that he remains another unthinking, reliable Republican rubber stamp, like Thelma Drake, John Welch, and the late Leo Wardrup. The issues are too important this time around; we can’t afford any more of these dim-witted placeholders.
If Virginia is one of the best-managed states, it earned that distinction in spite of Nick Rerras, not because of him.
Yeah, Yeah, but who patroned bills concerning real estate taxes and patroned the constitutional amendment for a 20% real estate tax exemption that passed?
Oh, yeah. Nick Rerras.
Yeah, yeah, theft again. Rerras hijacked that Homestead Exemption bill from Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple.
Wait. Wasn’t he the same Nick Rerras who hijacked someone else’s bill? We could have had tax relief years earlier if the Republican General Assembly thought about the people instead of politics. Oh yeah, and we should just ignore what a nut he is because he has one legislative accomplishment? I think not.
wow….y’all are R-e-a-c-h-i-n-g for an issue!
Not reaching, Brian. Letting the truth be known. It shows the character of the man when he steals a bill, steals a logo, and claims credit for something that he didn’t do, not to mention the now infamous FemiNazi comment. Add it all up and there’s only one conclusion: time for Nick to go!
Well, it’ll be Rerras doing the additional reaching once the residents of the Eastern Shore learn about what Rerras did to them signing onto HB3202.
Vivian, steals a bill? I know you’re smarter than that. Whipple’s bill was SJ 398. Rerras’ was SK 354. Lower number wins. That’s not stealing. It’s mathematics. Whipple’s bills concenring this never get out of committee. Rerras’ passed.
Now, y’all are acting that Northam invented the crab. Gee, I never noticed the Chesapeake Bay was here. I’m sure voters across the region think political logos are the most pressing issue facing the Commonwealth.
Plus there’s the burning issue of exactly how many legs a blue crab has. Doesn’t look like Rerras and Northam agree on that, either.
Haha…man, this guy never stops surprising me.
And Brian, that bill was introduced a year earlier, by the Dems. It was the Governor’s bill. Since Rerras can’t come up with any good ideas for the Commonwealth on his own, he just takes what he thinks looks good.
Plus, oh yeah, I’m sure the fact that Northam had already declared didn’t have anything to do with the Republican in the Senate giving him that one. Y’know, just to show that he’s sort of paying attention while in Richmond.
Y’all notice how Brian has no response for the FemiNazi comment?
And I didn’t specifically refer to MMW’s bill because I knew the bill actually was introduced the year before, although I’m drawing a blank on who submitted it originally.
Hey, Sean. Since practically all 1-ref. constitutional amendments are continued in even-number years, how does it matter? Rerras had one in 2006 as well.
Your argument is the political equivalent of “I know you are, but what am i.” Rerras’ bill passed, and y’all are whining about it.
