VA voter registration issues

Jim Patrick has an amazing post on the Virginia’s attempt to upgrade its voter registration software. The software is assigning voters to the wrong precinct and even worse: eliminating registered voters!

There was a problem a couple of weeks ago in Portsmouth regarding voters being assigned to the wrong precinct. (I don’t seem to be able to locate the information on line right now. ) I have to wonder if this is not a result of the faulty software.

I am appalled that Virginia finds itself in such a mess. Until this software is fixed, I urge all Virginians to check their registrations. If you happen to have been one of the ones dropped, I hope you have that voter registration card that was mailed out.

Thanks to Jim for bringing this to our attention.

  1. Despite all the warm fuzzies in the APA’s report about SBE’s project management, I can’t help getting the feeling that everyone involved was looking for excuses to accept the product, or at least parts of it, in time to secure the HAVA money.

Let’s just hope VVRS hasn’t been shut down completely. If the errors are as extensive as Patrick says (who signed off on letting them substitute USPS addresses?), they may need to drop back and regroup. At the very least they should be thinking hard about running the two systems in parallel.

And if they really need someone with COBOL experience on Unisys mainframes, I did some of that about 25 years ago. They can give me a call any time. 🙂
