The Daily Press is reporting that Hampton Commissioner of the Revenue Ross Mugler will not seek the Democratic nomination for state senate in the 1st district.
Mugler said in a release that he wanted to unite Democrats rather the subject them to a “quickly constructed firehouse primary” which could prove financially and politically expensive.
I guess this means that the nomination will go to former house candidate John Miller.
Ross Mugler’s a class act guy. I would have prefered to him get the nomination – only because I’ve met him in the past and I’m not familiar with Mr. Miller – but I think he did the honorable thing by putting the best interests of the party and the district ahead of his own.
Vivian,
Ross did indeed withdraw from the running and legally as of right now no one has filed although weexpect that to change within days. It might be noted that Ross was inerested but never actully filed to enter the race. John Miller is very well respected and if he is the candidate Trish Stall will not be able to attack him as a bureaucrat or put the te on his back like she did Marty Williams.
anon, I agree. Would love to see Mugler in Richmond, in either house. That being said lets hope John Miller wins-Trish Stall is a another tom gear, and that we dont need!
Mugler’s time will come and he’ll do well. I don’t know Miller at all but from what I’ve heard, he will be a strong candidate.
I hope you are right.
I know John Miller and he is a well respected and intelligent person. He knows the community and is involved in many committees.
He will represent us well in Richmond.
I respect Mr. Mugler and admire him greatly for this decision.
I agree with everything that others have written about Ross Mugler, including optimism regarding his future. That said, I’m at a loss to understand why some individuals profess admiration for John Miller. I had dealings with Miller during the 1970’s and 1980’s when he was on the staff of Paul Trible, and I found him to be consistently rude and condescending. It’s possible that he’s become a nicer individual in more recent years, but I would include Miller as one of the least pleasant men I’ve ever encountered. In 2001, while he was running on a Democratic ticket that included both Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, Miller lost his contest for the 94th House of Delegates seat. While that’s a tough district for a Democrat, it’s not impossible. Many precincts that are parts of the 1st State Senate District are tougher than what you’ll find in HD94.
