And another one less

Kathy over at rudeclerk tells us of another black Republican who has quit the party:

Richmond area activist Terone Green has quit the Republicans. The last straw for him was their lack of support for Senator Lambert in the recent primary.

“Sen. Lambert put his neck on the line for George Allen, but where was he?” Green asks in a piece in the Richmond Free Press.

[…]

Green is the Richmond area’s most vocal and visible black Republican, and has been active in GOP circles for more than 10 years.

While I have no sympathy for Benny Lambert, it was a reasonable assumption on his part that his support for George Allen in last year’s Senatorial campaign would translate into Republican support for him this year. After all, Lambert had to know that he would be primaried. Yet in the end, the Republican support did not materialize. And another black man leaves the Republican party.

As I said last fall, in its current incarnation, I do not believe that the Republican party serves the best interests of black Americans. But the Democrats have work to do in order to capture (or recapture) these folks.

  1. I wonder what it was that they were supposed to do for him … consistent with their GOP credentials?

And I’m not sure what it was that George Allen could have done in a Democrat Primary situation that would have helped Lambert.

  2. The linked post at rudeclerk has all of the details.

Allen could have lent his name and support. He trotted out Lambert at every opportunity last fall in an effort to woo the black vote. He should have come out to help Lambert.

Of course, you guys now have that silly rule about not voting in Democratic primaries, I don’t know that it would have translated into votes.

  3. It might have actually helped Allen out if he’d started going around with Benny talking about working together to secure funding for historical black colleges and what not. Considering how many people now seem to think he’s a racist.

  4. Vivian is right! Allen should have at least had to decency to have offered a token support for Lambert. BUT, it’s all about George Allen!!! Given the fact that Allen personally derailed his own political career, it would be interesting to see him up there in the debates with the current republikan candidates defending George Bush’s war. But since he’s on the sidelines, which candidate do you think he’ll support (if not publicaly, then privately)?
