John Miller, the Democratic candidate in the 1st Senate district, issued a press release yesterday on being declared the party’s nominee. The entire press release is below the fold is is well worth a read. We have a fine candidate here, one with a strong record of community involvement.

John Miller is the Candidate in 1st Senate District
Promises Common Sense Solutions
John Miller was declared the Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 1st Senate District today. “I am honored to accept the nomination and I will put my background in education and community service to work for the citizens of the district. I have been especially encouraged by the strong response to my campaign from Democrats, Independents and Republicans.”
“My campaign will be one of ideas not ideology. Working with Republicans, Democrats and Independents, I will offer common sense solutions to the problems faced by the people of our district. We need moderate voices in Richmond to keep Virginia moving forward,” Miller said. “Extremism on the left or right is not constructive to the process. Politics has become too polarized and rational voices have too often been drowned out by candidates who represent the extreme. It’s time to put people above divisive party politics so we can solve the problems that we face. ”
Miller is an award-winning journalist who worked for WVEC-TV and WHRO. He worked in the United States Senate as a top aide to U.S. Senator Paul Trible. Miller served as Vice President for University Relations at Christopher Newport University and currently is Associate Director of the Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center (VECTEC). He has also been an adjunct professor at CNU.
“My passion is fighting for a world class education for Virginia’s children” said Miller. “Virginia must be a place where all children read at grade levels and learn in safe, modern classrooms. Teachers must be celebrated, compensated and evaluated for the important work they do. We must ensure every child reaches their full potential and we do that by providing adequate resources for education, not pledging to cut off funding for public schools. ”
Miller pledges to address issues that concern the voters throughout his campaign. “While transportation is a very real problem in our area, improving our transportation system is a state responsibility and should not have been passed down to localities to fix. Imposing a regional authority is not an appropriate solution. We need a transportation solution that is rational and reasonable. We must make sure the millions of out-of-state drivers who use Virginia’s roads pay their fair share.”
Miller is a fiscal conservative and he supports efforts to allow localities more flexibility in giving property tax relief to citizens. Other top priorities will be health care including improving the quality of care for the elderly and continuing to improve public safety to keep our neighborhoods safe.
Miller is very involved in the community. He volunteers as an umpire for Warwick Little League and serves on numerous boards, including the Newport News Commission on Youth, The Newport News YMCA, the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center, the Newport News IDA Marketing Committee and People to People. He has also served as President of Peninsula READS – The Literacy Council and on the board of the Peninsula Food Bank, the Newport News Alliance for Youth and Young Audiences.
Miller lives in Newport News with his wife, Sharron. They have two children, Jenny and son-in-law Mark, and John and daughter-in-law Mary Peyton, and one grandson – Isaac.

I want to be the first to say my hat is off to John Miller and his wife Sharron. Thank you for deciding to run for the Senate seat.
We will work tirelessly to send you to Richmond.
Amazing how every Democrat is a fiscal conservative, while proposing more money for education, transportation, health care, and public safety.
what is the deal with Bearing Drift. I am so far left Dennis Kucinich finished first in my questtionaire, but yet I consider myself a fiscal conservative in a sense. To me a fiscal conservative has to do with whether we pay our bills we manufacture or leave them to other generations. Being a fiscal conservative means calling a tax a tax not a user fee. It also means balancing our budget. Unfortunately the Republicans in our state and in the nation fail at all this disastrously. They need not apply for fiscal conservatism. Plain truth is Democrats are way better at balancing the budget. I also firmly back our social programs that exist and in no way see them conflicting with how you handle the checkbook.
Fiscal Conservative means what it traditionally means. You pay for the Government services authorized and used and not place a huge birth tax on every newborn in the United States as does the GOP with massive deficits and debt.. It also means funding transportation as a state issue and not showing the complete lack leadership by the gutless ideologues in the GOP and punting it to the local communities.
Today’s GOP are incapable of basic governance at both the state and federal level and need to be sent into minority status for at least a decade or more so the Democrats can once again clean up the huge pile of crap left by the elephants.
John is exactly what is needed in Richmond. Sending Stall will do precisely that, stall progress for the Commonwealth.
Go get ’em John! I grew up in Poquoson and I would love to see a good Dem represent them!
The Poquoson, Newport News and Hampton neighborhoods that make up the First Senatorial District, will be well served by John Miller in the Virginia Senate. To get there, Democrats will have to reach out to their Republican neighbors, like both sides used to do in the Byrd years, so that smart, capable gentlemen like John Miller will be elected.
The idea is to get John Miller, who has the demonstrated capacity for working with members of both political parties, elected to provide well thought out solutions to the challenges that we all face.
Democrats and Republicans from the First District will need to set aside the more polarizing positions that have divided us in the past. By uniting behind the more hopeful vision of Virginia’s future that John Miller provides, I am confident that we will see real solutions to our problems, coming forth from the Senate in the years to come with John Miller as our Senator, leading the way.
I am a Republican. To me, John Miller has the rare blend of statesmanlike qualities, proven executive performance, and the courage to discuss new ideas and possible solutions, that make him the best choice for Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians and Independents, who hunger for a return to a positive and uplifting vision for Virginia.
Gem, by your definition a socialist would be a fiscal conservative as long as he didn’t run up a debt.
Congratulations to the Democrats for choosing a Number 1 candidate in this race for Senator! John Miller is probably one of the most capable and fair minded individuals who have ever run for office.
I think with his educational background having worked in the senate, dealed with tremendous government issues, he will be for ALL the people in trying to pursue the best for our district and the state.
Brian,
Why is it that every time someone mentions a social program they are socialist.
If I back social security I am a socialist, if I back Fema for disasters within our country I am a socialist, if I back any federal prgrams including the military I must be a socialist.Geez, give an American a break.
Yes
Brian in the USA you can be independent, democrat, republican, right wing, left wing, Christian , atheist, communist, libertarian, and even socialist and still be of the view that government should pay their bills.
Brian I would not label you a liberal just because my former neighbor Marty chose to work with the governor on some issues.
Funny Bearing Drift savaged Tricia Stall and supported Marty Williams, but now starts the character assasination against Miller? And Kirwin now is the judge who is a “fiscal conservative”???? After running Marty Williams campaign? Toooooooo much! Marty Williams was the biggest tax-n-spender in state government.
John Miller is a class act. Decent guy. Ask Glenn Oder. Miller ran a clean campaign and only lost by a very few votes (unlike Williams humiliating defeat) in that campaign. Oder will be the first to tell you that Miller ran a campaign about issues, not personalities. It was clean and honest. So that eliminates Kirwin who ran one of the dirtiest campaigns in recent memory against Tricia Stall. The nasty personal attack strategies of the Republicans are only going to lose them votes in this one.
In case you Republicans haven’t noticed the Democrats are breathing down your necks and have taken the Governors mansion twice in a row. Time to take back the Senate too!
Miller will eat Stall’s lunch on the education issue. Didn’t Stall advocate abolishing funding for public schools? Or doesn’t Kirwin remember his attack against her on “notlarrysabato” for that very issue?
Miller’s got my vote!
Even die-hard Republicans know that Stall won’t be a good candidate!
Stall can’t be a politician “of the people” when you live in a mansion on Riverside Drive, next to Paul Trible.
