Sign the petition

OK, here’s another petition against the “Civil Remedial Fees” (aka traffic fines) that are being imposed as a part of the transportation package. I mentioned another petition in this post but I guess that one didn’t catch fire. Already, more than 26,000 people have signed it – I was #26385.

  1. Why can’t “our” elected officials get a decent transportation bill instead of creating authorities and abuser fees? Stop trying to fool voters with garbage and be honest about it-roads cost money; the government raises money by taxing, so we have to increase taxes.

  2. I don’t have a problem with the abuser fees. In fact, I support them.

Everyone I’ve talked to is being more careful about how they drive since the law passed.

Simple way to not be affected by the new law: Don’t break it.

  3. Wow, Ward just 2 hours later and it’s up to 40,000 signatures.

On a recent trip up I-95 in Virginia I spent time driving in the right hand lane. I won’t say exactly how fast I was going, lest someone hungry to generate revenue reads this, however, I was doing “at least” the speed limit and possibly more. The left lane was flying past me at a dizzying speed. But I was watching those license plates. There were too many for a single person to keep track of, but it was easy to see where they were from. Almost all were from out of state. I do not exaggerate when I say almost all – it was easily more than 95% of the cars in the left lane were from out of state.

It was not something that I had ever paid attention to before, but it does seem that a large portion of our speeders are not homegrown.

I’ve got a clean driving record (knock on wood) and am very conscientious, but I will say that speeds on 95 can sometimes sneak up on you when going up and down hills and surrounded by cars going so quickly. It is shocking to me that one momentary lapse could cause 7+ years of “fees”.

I saw some commenters suggesting that employing cruise control would solve the accidental speeding issue. Well, anyone who uses cruise control between Richmond and DC is nutty, IMO. That’s a sure death sentence – even if you set it at 65.

Does anyone have any links or facts on exactly how many demerit points one receives for various infractions? Also, can you get plus points for good driving? If I could get one for every year, I should have over 25 by now. I think that I’ve heard there is a limit (and that it is quite low). If they want this situation to be a little more fair, perhaps good driving points could be awarded so that one tiny error doesn’t wipe out a lifetime of obedient behavior.

BTW, I’ve got no problem at all with the DWI-related stuff. In my book, the higher the better.

  4. Just signed the petition at midnight and I was 40,426! Hope this sends a message to our legislators that we’re tired of BS laws such as this… Someone please remind me again just who were the idiots responsible for this legislation. I want to be sure and send their opponents a contribution next election… The other 40,425 who also signed the petition should also do likewise!

  5. No points for good behavior, Olivia 🙂 Points stay on the record for two years from the date of infraction, while whatever you did to earn those points stays on your record anywhere from 3 years (most speeding) to 11 years (running someone over with your car). Full explanation here.

Not that I know anything about this at all.

  6. Guess we have an answer on the merits of this legislation. So far 78,073 voters have signed the petition! Some of the comments prove to be interesting. Looks like this good citizens of Virginia are about ready to string up some legislators… Anyone care to predict hpw many will sign the petition by next Sunday nite?
