Some 200 supporters turned out last night for the official office opening of John Miller, Democratic candidate in the 1st Senate district. On hand to offer remarks was Senator Creigh Deeds.
Announced at the event last night was the endorsement of Miller by the Virginia Education Association. VEA President Princess Moss was on hand to make the endorsement. She said, “We are proud to stand behind John. He will reach out to independents and moderates in both parties to improve education in Virginia.Β”
The John Miller for Senate campaign offices are located at 2 Hidenwood Shopping Center in Newport News. The offices are in spaces formerly occupied by a bank, with teller windows included π The campaign cleverly placed people behind each teller window, all ready to take contributions.
Near the end of the event, Miller’s lovely wife, Sharron, distributed ballcaps with the Miller for Senate logo on them. The caps, available in navy or white, were an in-kind contribution to the campaign from daughter Jenny, who couldn’t make last night’s event. I don’t know exactly how many hats Jenny sent, but they were quickly all gone. The candidacy of John Miller has energized the people in the 1st District. I hope to have some video of the event soon.
Hampton Roads is doing our share in helping to take back the Senate. The top two races in the state are right here, folks. Expect two new Senators from Hampton Roads come November, John Miller in the 1st and Ralph Northam in the 6th. But neither campaign can do it alone. Volunteer and send money to John Miller and Ralph Northam today!

Sam Eure, former President of the York County Education Association and candidate for York Board of Supervisors in District 4, introduced Ms. Moss. Sam’s a terrific guy, and he’s very well liked in the District after years of teaching and coaching sports at the local high school.
Mathews County Democratic Chair, dynamo Jen Little, was there too. She’s gotten her bumper stickers in for her school board race. With so many great candidates running for so many seats, the back of my car is getting a bit cluttered π
Looking forward to hearing you speak at the panel.
We know that Tricia Stall is against the Education status quo, but she hasn’t bothered to offer any viable alternative. Does she plan to have poor children running through the streets as beggars like they have in India?
On the other hand we have John Miller, truly a proven leader with statesmanlike qualities, who has stated his resolve to improve our education system. John Miller has implied support for higher education initiatives, but I would like to hear more specifics from both sides.
For example, does Virginia really need a fully funded Pre-K program?
Corporate America has “flattened” their bureaucracies by taking advantage of improved span of control afforded by information technology, but education bureaucracies continue to be as bloated as ever.
Vocational/Technical programs need to be strengthened and targeted to provide job training so that high school graduates are ready for the workforce.
As for colleges, has anyone looked at the curricula? A degree from many of Virginia colleges means only that one has endured four years of socialist dogma, without learning skills of critical analysis, or being exposed to the skills that are in demand by business and industry.
There are many educational issues that need to be addressed. Lets hear the candidates describe their proposed solutions. Citizens deserve better than a vague statement of support for or against the status quo.
Yes, Virginia needs a fully funded pre-K program? Why not give our children the best preperation for Kindergarden and beyond.
Let me see, we can either pay in for pre-K or pay it when they don’t graduate from HS.
My children went to Montessori from age 3 on and then I put them in public school from 1st grade on. They both did quite well because the “learned how to learn”.
We all hear that children are our future, then why don’t we support them the best we can.
John Miller understands this.
Ms. Stall now has a line on her web page that says she will not vote to “defund” public education. What does that mean?
Both her kids went to public school in Newport News, so why is she dissing our schools in our city?
I have no idea. Do you? Ask her.
