Vick: no jail time?

The story that I linked to yesterday regarding the possibility of a plea deal for Michael Vick has been updated and was included in this morning’s Virginian Pilot. What caught my eye in the revised story was this:

If Vick pleads guilty to the conspiracy charge, the guidelines call for a term of no more than six months in jail for someone with no previous criminal record.

That likely would mean probation for Vick, said Norfolk defense attorney Andrew A. Protogyrou, who practices in federal courts but is not involved in the Vick case.

Wow. No jail time? All the more reason to take the deal.

  1. Based upon the way things are looking right now, there is pretty much no other option than a plea bargain. Even if he does serve some time, it would most likely be extremely shorter if he took a deal.

Obviously Vick’s major concern would be that he might not be able to play in the NFL anymore, but one would imagine he probably has millions of dollars that could help him through his early retirement.

  2. I can see MV being suspended for the season..but forever? what MV participated in was henioius, and he is deserving of punishment…but for god sake, Ray Lewis basically participated in a murder of two individuals and helped to covered it up, and didn’t miss a game…

Yes, that was a few years ago, and things have even changed since then…but still, I’ve heard the argument that if Vick and his posse would have just killed someone over a petty argument (e.g. Lewis) then he’d likely (with great legal representation) get off scott free…I’d have to agree..sadly enough…

  3. THAT’S FREAKING RIDICULOUS.

According to the indictment, his group stole family pets from the surrounding neighborhood so the pitbulls could practice attacking them without the risk of injury associated with fighting another pitbull.

I don’t value a dog’s life over a human’s, but I do value someone’s children pretty high up there, and if someone stole my daughter’s golden retriever to “test” a pitbull then SOMEONE needs to go to jail.

  4. If he was sentenced to 6 months, then he would serve about 80% of that time. He should do time if convicted of these very serious allegations. Way beyond just dog fighting, cruelty to animals of an unthinkable degree.

Read my article on Michael Vick and tell me what you think.

  5. Yes, the charges are henious, and MV deserves time in the hole..period. But I do not think a lifetime ban from the NFL is fair, one year suspension and 8 months in the club fed (80 percent of his sentence) and 250grrr+ fine would be adequate…

  6. He’s toast in the NFL. No team will touch him because of all the bad publicity that would accompany him, the protesters, boycotts, etc.

If Vick doesn’t serve AT LEAST one year, people are going to go nuts. Include me in. I don’t care if the dog is a golden retriever, a cocker spaniel, or a pit bull, no animal deserves to be abused like Michael Vick abused them. It’s disgusting. Abusing vulnerable beings, children, or dogs, is done only by the sickest of minds who cannot identify with the feelings and suffering of others. I want Vick out of the NFL, and would prefer that he and has gang were also out of the whole country. Animals and people would be safer for it.

  7. I don’t know who killed the dogs, and truly don’t care. I would never compare the abuse of a child or woman to be the same as a animal.
I am glad to read that some people want to wait until the courts decide. But its funny that people are ready to loose their minds if he doesn’t get at least one year. But I don’t remember seeing these people loosing their minds in 2005 when 1/2 the South was drowning on national tv, due to hurricane Katrina.

What I would like to see is this country start giving equal sentencing. (What is good for the common man/woman should be good for the celeb) However, in 2007 celebs have gotten off EASY, so I say don’t stop now. Give him 5 yrs probation and max $fine. At least that way, the race card can’t be used.

  8. If Vick does not go to jail that is a joke. Ray Lewis’ story was an entirely different situation and had you done your homework, you could clearly see why he was not convicted. Vick is a criminal and as such should spend as much time as possible in jail for his actions. I’m so sick of this country’s lack attitude towards animal cruelty. If he doesn’t go to jail, at least let us host a pay-per-view event where he gets put in a cage like the animal he is and ripped to shreds by the dogs he abused. That sounds about right to me.

  9. Hmm – let’s see – we’ve got the same IP address for Sarah James, Rose, Damian, MaryLove, Jack and Chris. So I conclude they must all be the same person, even though they used different email addresses. Posts have been moved to the moderation queue.
