Some folks have nothing better to do than to make mountains out of molehills, especially when it comes to honest mistakes made by first-time candidates. Such is the case here. Bobby Mathieson’s career in law enforcement spans 30 years – he served as a Virginia Beach police officer for 26 years, nine months, to be exact – and he rightfully uses his badge in his literature. The Virginia Beach badge includes in its center the seal of the city, which is trademarked. As such, it cannot be used without permission.
Of course, somebody out there brought to the attention of the City Clerk that Mathieson was using the seal without permission. A letter was issued – which Mathieson has not even received – requesting that the badge either be removed or the city seal obscured.
The copy of the badge you see in this post was just obtained from Mathieson’s website. So even though he hasn’t gotten the letter, the Mathieson campaign has already complied. End of story.
Somebody must be really nervous about the Mathieson campaign. Keep on doing what you’re doing, Bobby. You’re gonna win this thing!
Let’s make sure that Bobby gets the win he deserves. Contribute and volunteer today!

How does it happen that we’re hearing about this before Mathieson received the letter from the Clerk? Hmm? Maybe a Freedom of Information Act request would provide an answer to that question. There must be a record of all the people who requested a copy of the letter, or who were provided with a copy of the letter.
I have always found this kind of stuff ridiculous. Politics aside, oh I forgot that some cannot seem to put it aside, the man has earned the honor to display such a badge of honor don’t ya think? Just like in the military your not supposed to express your free speech while in uniform eventhough the symbol of that very uniform is by all purposes defenders of our Constitution and thus free speech. The seal of the police department is not nearly as important as the men and women who honor it by serving their communities everyday or those whom are retired. People should be more concerned over those that undermine the respect and authority of badge and not those who wish to honor it. The man served faithfully, get over it and make a case against him on the issues. There are serious issues that need to be solved and it seems to me the more time people waste on these things the less citizens are afforded the opportunity of hearing solutions be discussed.
J.,
And we’re all waiting for the Democrats to take a position on some issues.
V,
It’s funny. You haven’t said a thing about the outright personal character assassinations that occur of Democrat blogs, but simply reporting a letter of a candidate you support violating the law, and you rush to the fore.
“of” should be “on”. apologies
I don’t have any control over any blog other than my own, not to mention the fact that I am unaware of any so-called “personal character assassinations” on D blogs. The blogs I read and frequent don’t engage in such behavior.
But you did more than “report,” Brian. Want to explain how you managed to get a copy of the letter before the addressee did?
Oh, and about positions? How about this? Isn’t that taking a position?
Or are you just proud of this website which hasn’t been updated since April 8, 2005? Where are the issues on that site?
Touche, Vivian!
Vivian gets out the carving knife . . . BK stands too close . . . BK starts to bleed . . . Vivian makes the case and puts “Short Pants” in his place . . . AGAIN.
You ever notice how Brian always starts out lashing out about Democrats and issues . . .BUT NOT ONCE . . . are the things he sticks his nose in issue-related. What the hell does a badge have to do with issues?
Here’s a hint . . . Brian can’t handle the issues — much like John Boy Welch. So he looks for the cheap shot — as always. It’s actually quite funny . . . Brian quickly mentions something about issues (like a drive-by squirting from a water pistol) and then proceeds to kick and scream about trivial bullshit.
Small minds focus on small things. And Brian never surprises.
(By the way, BK mentions “violating the law” . . . but no law has been violated. That’s how Brian looks at things. If he doesn’t like it, he screams that laws have been broken. I guess THAT explains why he never went to law school.)
I wonder which is worse . . . a distinguished and honored police officer being rewarded with his badge upon retirement which he pictures in a campaign lit piece . . . or a chiropractor blasting away that he is a DOCTOR and/or filing bankruptcy while voting against raising the minimum wage?
Is it any surprise that BK and John Boy are joined at the hip? They seem to be cut from the same cloth — the cloth of deceit and obfuscation. They deserve each other.
Nice negative attack, Nixon. ANd nice language, too.
Vivian, I must’ve heard about it the same way Mathieson heard about it, since you say he didn’t even receive the letter and magically thought to change it.
By the way, I just went to http://www.johnwelch.com, and noticed it is updated, talk about issues, and of course, you neglected to link to it.
For a blogger who built a “non-partisan” reputation, you must be getting some pretty big heat to throw the partisan bombs this year. Your sense of fairness is out the window.
comma got in the way – http://www.johnwelch.com
Why don’t you explain how you got the letter first, Brian? You keep dodging that, thinking that attacking me is going to somehow let you off the hook. It isn’t. In your haste to attempt to smear somebody, you tipped your hand because there is no way that you should have gotten the letter first. Rookie mistake, Brian. And attacking me isn’t going to make up for it.
As for Welch’s site – I linked to the first one I got to when I Googled his name. Not my fault it has a higher Google rank than the updated one.
Of course, had you not decided to make the comment about Democrats and issues, I would have never even gone looking for Welch’s site. You refuse to acknowledge that the Ds are talking about issues. And when you get caught at it, you revert back to personal attacks. Trust me – I’ve been attacked by folks better than you and I’m still standing, so you might as well give up on that one.
I’m not getting any heat from anybody. I’m just sick and tired of your behavior. There are legitimate issues in these campaigns but instead of you talking about that, you snipe at the stuff that doesn’t matter.
perhaps Brian’s bellyaching a week ago on Eileen’s site prompted Bobby’s camp????

more than enough time to call the city and complain, dont’cha think?
Bobby is a decent guy who is willing to put himself out there to serve the public. Cheap shots by small minds is what keeps such people out of politics and what lets guys like Welch get elected and re-elected. Bobby deserves a lot of credit for his guts and for his willingness to wade through the pettiness that characterizes politics.
Wow Nix and Welch doesn’t “deserve a lot of credit for his guts and for his willingness to wade through the pettiness” out of all the attacks he has had to endure in the last few months. Now I know he is the incumbant and thus an easy target because he has a real record to evaluate, but before we start giving people passes for being “decent” guys lets get down to the issues.
My concern isn’t that Brian got his hands on the info, its more to the point who provided it and in what capacity they were able to do so.
It is such a contrast between local and national campaigns. I know it all has to do with resources, but how long are people going to concentrate on the transportation dilemma and not see that there are countless bills right now that will be considered next session that should be debated. I fear that no one wants to talk about those issues for fear of bringing the issues to the front and its alot easier to keep talking about transportation authorities, abuser fees etc.
If Bobby wants to get the support of those Independents that supported Welch in the past he needs to engage in the other issues.
As for blogs wasn’t a short time a go we were blogging about the ethics of blogging. Now I am sure that their are blogs that need to be put into detention for their actions but VJP’s is not one of them.
Wah Wah. Vivian plays victim when I notice her partisanship..help! Help! Vivian’s been attacked. Calling a blogger a partisan who has a roll of Democratic candidates is somehow an “attack.”
As to the “information” – it’s public information. Are you actually saying that public documents should be kept secret?
I had heard after the fact that the letter was sent, so like any citizen, I called, asked if it was true, and asked if I could have a copy. The city made it available. Virginia Beach is pretty citizen-friendly when it comes to following the law – you may be too used to Norfolk politics.
But, yes. You excuse the Democrat’s trademark law violation and think the only problem was that I learned about it. Typical.
