Report: Mathieson event with Kaine

Bobby MathiesonI attended this afternoon’s event for Bobby Mathieson with Tim Kaine. The hosts for this were Finance Secretary Jody Wagner and her husband, Alan. What a gorgeous afternoon at the Beach! I saw bunches of folks there that I hadn’t seen for a while and it was good to catch up. Among the many in attendance were Mayor Meyera Oberndorf and Senator Creigh Deeds.

Kaine did a good job as usual in giving his speech about the state of the Commonwealth. He mentioned that Mathieson is in a tight race but one that he can win.

Mathieson, whom I haven’t heard speak for a while, is getting better. He cracked a joke without even realizing it: in introducing his wife, he spoke about her support and said something to the effect of “she always has something hot waiting for me when I get home late.” Of course, he was talking about dinner, but that didn’t stop some of us from snickering a bit 🙂

Drawing applause was Mathieson’s comment about Wagner and the possibility of her running for something. Wagner’s name has, of course, been mentioned as a possible candidate for Congress next year or some statewide office in the future.

Mathieson mentioned that the 21st District was won by Kaine, Webb and Kellam – the only district in Virginia Beach in which all three candidates won. There is no doubt that a candidate with such tremendous ties to the community is perfectly positioned to win this race. As always, you can volunteer and/or contribute to help make this happen.

I took the opportunity to check with Deeds on the status of the Senate races in other parts of the state. When asked, the Senator responded with a broad smile. That doesn’t mean we don’t have work to do, folks, because we do. But it’s good to know that a number of races across the state are going well. Help those candidates as well. A full listing of the Democratic candidates, including website links where available, can be found on my 21/51 page.

A good time was had by all. With the number of people there (once again, I’m not good at estimating crowd sizes and this time, I failed to ask somebody to do it for me) I would say that this wasa successful fundraising event for Mathieson.

And I’m certainly enjoying my bag of Jody’s popcorn 🙂

  1. Um, Brian – if you read this blog, you’d be aware that I have always said that. I get estimates from others.

    You’re getting really tiresome.

  2. Golly gee . . . Brian is disappointed. How sad. Considering Welch’s embarassing performance on “On the Record” yesterday, you would think he had more important things to worry about.

And who dresses Welch? He looked like the maitre de at an Italian restaurant in Secaucus.

  3. Ooops . . . . sorry LB.

    I MEANT . . . uh . . . uh . . . uh . . . . Sioux Falls. Yeah . . .that’s the ticket . . . Sioux Falls. Or was it Syracuse . . . yeah . . . yeah . . . THAT’s IT!

  4. Did Welch really have the gall to claim that he “proposed a gas tax increase over a year ago?” On what planet? He floated the idea to the Virginian-Pilot, which gave him a bunch of unwarranted publicity. However, he never introduced a bill to accomplish that. His committee, Finance, killed all such bills proposed by Democrats.

Oh, I heard his explanation. He floated it to the Republican caucus, which “thought he was nuts.” He then did nothing about it. That’s the difference between a leader and a follower. Welch is nothing but a follower, and a lousy, embarrassing, not too smart follower at that.
