Rich on Rove: “He got out while the getting was good”

Franck Rich has a great op-ed piece on Karl Rove. Too bad it is only available to Times Select subscribers right now. However, I did find the entire piece reproduced on a blog here. Some highlights:

What the Rove critics on the right recognize is that it may be even more difficult for their political party to dig out of his wreckage than it will be for America.

[…]

Every poll and demographic accounting finds the Republican Party on the losing side of history, both politically and culturally.

[…]

For all the minstrel antics at the 2000 convention, the record speaks for itself: there is not a single black Republican serving in either the House or Senate, and little representation of other minorities, either. Far from looking like America, the G.O.P. caucus, like the party’s presidential field, could pass for a Rotary Club, circa 1954.

Rich hits the nail on the head in so many ways. Rove’s legacy may very well be that he was the architect of the demise of the Republican party.

  1. Wow, isn’t that cocky? Hasn’t anyone ever told this guy Rich not to count his chickens before they hatch? Republicans are having trouble right now, but make no mistake. I have heard this kind of rhetoric many times before, and that is usually shortly before the Democrats start to have some troubles in an election.

  2. AEM – I have no idea whether my linking to that article is a copyright violation, especially since the NYT has said it is going to move its op-ed stuff from behind the pay-for-access firewall.

I try to find reprints of the op-ed pieces to link to but in this case, none of the other papers have reprinted the article yet.
