From the AP via PilotOnline:
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned, officials said Monday, ending a monthslong standoff with critics who questioned his honesty and competence at the helm of the Justice Department.
Like rats on a sinking ship:
Gonzales, whom Bush once considered for appointment to the Supreme Court, is the fourth top-ranking administration official to leave since November 2006. Donald H. Rumsfeld, an architect of the Iraq war, resigned as defense secretary one day after the November elections. Paul Wolfowitz agreed in May to step down as president of the World Bank after an ethics inquiry. And top Bush adviser Karl Rove earlier this month announced that he was stepping down.
Could Cheney be next?
Second prediction going into the 2008 Presidential election is now coming true. With the resignation I am now looking for the report on Iraq, which was the first prediction in terms of how the Republicans will shape the next year in its bid to keep the White House. The Dems are now caught in what could be a trap of hearings to replace the AG which could certainly turn out to be quite a mess. Do they play politics? Do they simply confirm and give Republicans no room for spin? My mother always said be careful what you wish for and in politics that is certainly true. AG is one thing but Cheney will not provide Dems with the satisfaction.
It’s wonderful that now he’ll get so much more time to spend time with his family!
“Like rats on a sinking ship.” Sorta, except that begs the question of who sank the ship in the first place. Another analogy: like politicians leaving a Texas whorehouse.
What would be the point of Cheney resigning ?
Yeah, but can we expect the Senate to do their jobs and confirm his replacement, or will the Senate play little games with this for a few months?
CR UVa, two words: recess appointment.
That’s not the Senate’s job, CR. The Senate’s job is to give advice and determine whether or not it will consent to an appointment. I know that’s a hard thing to understand, but tis true. Go read the Constitution.
Of course, the President is in a bit of a bind here. The only acceptable nominee (that is, one who places the rule of law over party rule) will pose a direct threat to him. That can’t be fun. I feel so gosh darn bad for him . . .
I thought that Bush and Reid made an “agreement” that he wouldn’t use any more recess appointments. Didn’t they do that over FISA? I can’t remember where I read that. I doubt Bush will honor it anyway. I’m hearing the rumor that Chertoff is the favored replacement. Trade one bad apple for another. The truth is, that office won’t see light until the person in the Oval Office is replaced.
Yes, there was a Reid-Bush agreement, and while I’m as likely to check as the next guy when the President claims the sky is blue, I don’t think there will be a recess appointment. The President, in his press conferences this AM, quite specifically referred to Senate confirmation of a nominee.
Yes, Bush is known for keeping his word. BTW, where’s OBL?
I love my texas BQ, beat that.
