Spruill op-ed on transportation

Lionell SpruillToday’s edition of the Virginian-Pilot features an op-ed by Chesapeake delegate Lionell Spruill Sr. The topic is the transportation plan and Spruill outlines for all why he never supported it.

From the very beginning I supported the Legislative Black Caucus plan for a statewide gas tax increase of eight cents. Caucus members felt that this would be most fair because it would apply statewide and would not penalize those who do not drive or use the roads as much as others.

Of course, the Republican-controlled General Assembly didn’t want a gas tax, because that would violate their “no statewide tax increases” pledge.

Spruill lays out five concerns that he had with HB3202 and supports a revisiting of the issue when the General Assembly reconvenes. Given the issues with the bill, I think that may be the best course of action at this point.

  1. I think everyone should vote against every single legislator that voted for this transportation plan. If there is no one else running against them, DON’T VOTE FOR THEM AT ALL! Talk about big brother looking over our shoulders-this goes even beyond that. Big brother is cleaning out our pocket books, too! For every kid that doesn’t get child support because the parent has to pay driving fees and lawyers and for every parent that has to dip into their own money to keep their kid from screwing up royally-THANKS, THANKS A LOT!
