Sunday’s Virginian Pilot contained a front page story about Norfolk City Manager Regina Williams. While I was aware that her husband has been quite ill, until reading the story, I did not know the extent of his illness.
In December, Drew Williams walked into Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with what he thought was a bad cold. An active man who in recent years traveled from coast to coast to play in tennis tournaments, he hasn’t walked since.
I haven’t seen Drew since last October, when he played in Senator Yvonne Miller’s golf tournament. I got to know Drew fairly well as the result of his and my involvement with Norfolk United Facing Race. He got involved with the organization shortly after he and Regina came to Norfolk.
Regina, on the other hand, I do not know well. I’ve heard others speak both well and ill of her. But learning that she has been running the city while also tending her sick husband says something of the commitment that she has to both.
My prayers are with Regina and Drew at this time. Get well, Drew.
