Locals headed to LA for Jena 6 rally

The Virginian Pilot is reporting that plans are underway to transport two bus loads of people from Hampton Roads to Jena, Louisiana next week for the sentencing of the first of the Jena 6. There will be a national rally.

Geri Collins of Norfolk is hoping to fill at least two buses with supporters of the “Jena Six,’’ six black students at Jena High School who were initially charged with attempted second degree murder after assaulting a white student last December.

[…]

Tony Lee, another organizer from Yorktown, learned about the case and the national rally by listening to “The Michael Baisden Show” on105.3,WKUS. Lee and Collins have partnered with 95.7, WVKL to spread the word. Lee hopes to have a full bus leaving Hampton on Tuesday evening; Collins plans to have one pulling out of Norfolk

Missing from the article is how to contact either Collins or Lee should you wish to participate. If I’m able to track down that information, I’ll post it here.

  1. For those who haven’t been keeping up with this story, it’s the kind of trash that we thought was gone with Jim Crow.

    1. An African-American youth defending himself was charged with attempted murder. Louisiana law requires a lethal weapon for the charge. The produced weapon: a tennis shoe. (Yes, a tennis shoe.)

    2. 3 African-American youths had a shotgun pulled on them. They wrestled it away. They were charged with stealing the shotgun; the White who pulled it is uncharged.

WIth more notice I would have liked to have made the bus trip myself.

  2. I have been looking for A bus like crazy leaving from St. Louis MO. Time is so short now that I am almost in a panic state. I have been calling the raido stations. Please help me.

  3. This hole thing makes me sick. I am a caucasian woman from Park City, Utah who is behind all of you marching. The unjust, racist justice system not only in Jena but throughout this country is a massive problem that needs to be addressed. I am disgusted that nothing has been done about the noose that was hung from the tree at the high school. Clearly what is being thaught in the homes of these caucasian individuals is hate. This is very unfortunate that there are still inequalities in our society and hate being taught in our homes. I just want all of you protesters to know that I stand behind you and am hopeful that a fair ruling will be made, although it is interesting that the jury is all caucasian (jury of your peers, right!). Also I am hopeful that they might go after the caucasian men that hung that noose and require that they give a public apology to the african american community and anyone else that was offended from this. The next step is to work for pushing through hate crime laws.
