According to this article in the USA Today, college students are having trouble with history.
The study from the non-profit Intercollegiate Studies Institute shows that less than half of college seniors knew that Yorktown was the battle that ended the American Revolution or that NATO was formed to resist Soviet expansion. Overall, freshmen averaged 50.4% on a wide-ranging civic literacy test; seniors averaged 54.2%, both failing scores if translated to grades.
OK, so just what are they teaching kids today?
Anyway – take the test here and report your results. Me? I got 80%, which is better than the monthly average of 72.7%.
They’re teaching them “self esteem.”
I did okay:
You answered 59 out of 60 correctly — 98.33 %
Average score for this quiz during September: 74.4%
Average score since September 18, 2007: 74.4%
According to an article on washingtonpost.com, fourth and eigth grade math scores have increased nationwide, so apparently we’re teaching them math.
I missed 2.
95%. Missed 3 of the econ questions.
90%
Just a quick note: It could be argued that economics is separate from history and that the questions on this quiz would not apply. Also the phrase “if translated to grades” doesn’t necessarily mean SOLs. I think that if you scored 50% one year on a WH1 exam, you would pass.
I can tell you what they aren’t teaching. They aren’t teaching comprehensive sex education here in Virginia. Heck, where I am from in Georgia they are fighting not to teach evolution. How can expect them to get around to teaching mundane things like American History? 😉
