Where the candidates stand: offshore energy

Off Shore EnergyThe topic today was offshore energy. Check out where the candidates stand in comparison to the position of The Virginian Pilot. (Click to enlarge. Graphic credit: The Virginian Pilot)

  1. This one surprised me–mainly because I’m quite surprised to see that only Purkey and Tarbor (sorry if I misspelled it) disagreed. I would have expected to see at least a couple of Democrats disagree with that position. Meanwhile I’m surprised that a lot of Republicans agreed to the 50 mile limit and the exploration-only approach. Unless my memory is mistaken, that’s not exactly what some of these Republican incumbents voted for earlier.

  2. The agree/disagree characterization was made by the Pilot, not the candidates.

I was interviewed on the topic and explained my position, drill, yes, not necessarily 50 miles out, (the fishing by offshore rigs is great and 50 miles is too far for my boat). The question about making it contingent on the country adopting mandatory conservation was not even asked. We did discuss the great employment opportunities it would bring to the region, but that didn’t make it to their statement.

From that discussion, they characterized my position as “Disagree” though that hardly is a complete discription.

I think it was just a badly phrased statement of position than none of the candidates fully agreed with or fully rejected and the Pilot made a wild ass guess as to which descriptor fit each candidate.
