Tuesday, February 19, 2008 is the date set by Governor Tim Kaine for the special election in the 99th House district.
“It is important that we have a delegate in place as soon as possible during the session commencing in January 2008,” Governor Kaine said. “Holding the special election on February 19th will provide a new delegate with the opportunity to participate meaningfully in the legislative session and to commence important constituent services promptly.”
The 99th is the seat vacated by Rob Wittman, who, after winning re-election on November 6, ran for and won the 1st Congressional District seat left open by the death of Jo Ann Davis. Wittman did not resign his seat prior to running. However, given the 60-day blackout prior to the primary (February 12), even if he had done so, the date chosen by Kaine would have been the earliest possible election date.
Former delegate Al Pollard, who previously represented the 99th, is expected to run.
A special election ONE WEEK after a presidential primary. Sheesh. Is it any wonder why election turnouts are so pitiful? How much money will be wasted because of the seperate elections? i really wish that there would be 3 days a year and ONLY 3 days that elections can be held. No matter what office, primary/general election, or proposition was on the ballot, if i had my druthers, ALL elections would be held on a certain day in February, June, or November EVERY year. That state law (the 60-day blackout) needs to go!
Not a bad idea. Why not ask your legislators to introduce a bill like that?
