Nearly 100 people attended last night’s legislative sendoff and holiday party for the Democratic delegation from Virginia Beach. In attendance were Del.-elect Joe Bouchard, Del.-elect Bobby Mathieson, Del. Algie Howell, Sen.-elect Ralph Northam, all of whom represent precincts in the city. Also there was Del. Kenny Alexander, who is rumored to be running for LG, and House Democratic Caucus chairman, Del. Brian Moran, an as-yet unannounced candidate for governor.
Greeting guests at the door was VBCBC chair Ollie Bates, decked out in a Santa suit and passing out candy canes. Everyone was asked to bring a covered dish to share. As the result, tables and counters were loaded with various goodies.
Each of the electeds were given an opportunity to speak briefly. Each used their time to thank those assembled for all the hard work that had resulted in their elections and to comment on what is coming in the upcoming session.
Also in attendance were two unannounced candidates for the 2nd Congressional seat currently held by Thelma Drake. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next couple of months.
I understand that this was the first legislative sendoff held in Virginia Beach in 13 years. Further, this is the first time in 10 years that Virginia Beach has had Democratic representation (those whose districts lie solely in the city). To say that the mood there was ecstatic would be an understatement.
A good time was had by all. Sorry I don’t have any pictures – I left my camera at home 😦
