No delay to the start of tax season – for most

1040 formWith the AMT freeze now the law, the IRS has announced that there will be no delay to the start of tax season for most taxpayers. Feb. 11 is the target date for those who need to file certain AMT-related forms.

Although as many as 13.5 million taxpayers will not be able to file their returns until Feb. 11, the effect of the delay may be lessened by the fact that under previous filing patterns only between 3 million to 4 million taxpayers file returns with the five affected forms during these early weeks in the filing season.

[…]

The February delay caused by the AMT patch will affect taxpayers using any of these five forms:

  • Form 8863, Education Credits.
  • Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.
  • Form 1040A’s Schedule 2, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A Filers.
  • Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit.
  • Form 8859, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit.

So of you have to file any of these forms, be prepared to wait a bit. The IRS will begin accepting returns for all other filers on January 14.

  1. I’m so proud of you that you’re not using this story as an opportunity to solicit our business. But I kind of wish you had because I hated my last accountant. 🙂 Look for an email from me in the next couple of days.

  2. Naw, not soliciting ~ just providing info 😉 Truth be told, I’ve gotten quite a few hits on this blog as the result of this topic. (Of course, if I ever get my business website back up, this kind of info really belongs over there.)

I’ll be looking for the email 😉
