WVEC* has a nice story up about the cancer center being built by HU.
The traditionally black Hampton University is footing the bill for a $225 million treatment and research center because of the prevalence of cancer among African-Americans.
“African Americans have the highest cancer death rate of all racial, ethnic groups,” said Bill Thomas of Hampton University.
“So many African-Americans, as well as other people, suffer from cancer,” said Sen. Yvonne Miller (D) Norfolk. “If there is any way to relieve human suffering, we want to do that.”
Gov. Tim Kaine has proposed allocating $1 million for the project, but some legislators want to boost that to as much as $10 million. The center is expected to open in 2010 or 2011.
This is a tough budget cycle to be requesting money but it is indeed a worthy cause. HU is to be applauded for going forward with this new technology.
