In the hustle and bustle of the general assembly and upcoming presidential primary, forgotten is the fact that Norfolk will be holding elections in May. On the ballot will be the two superwards.
Representing Ward 6, which is the superward in which I live, is Barclay Winn. Winn has served on council since 2000 and is said to have aspirations of running for mayor.
While he may not have been the establishment’s choice at the beginning, it seems that Winn has won over some of his former opponents by bringing his business sense to the council. At this time, there are no announced candidates to challenge Winn, although I have heard a couple of names floating around that may file.
Representing Ward 7 is Daun Hester. Hester has been on council since 1996 and is a former vice mayor. Hester also plans to run for mayor at some point.
From what I’ve heard, some of Hester’s detractors have decided to back an opponent in this race. As of this writing, not only has the opponent not filed, but I understand he does not live in the district. If I read the requirements correctly, one only has to live in the district at the time of filing in order to be eligible.
The deadline for filing for the May 6 election is March 4.
For what it’s worth, I believe both Barclay Winn and Daun Hester should be re-elected.
maybe someone should ask a question, of why east ocean view is still a community held hostage by crime and drugs? maybe someone should ask why gangs rule are high schools, maybe someone should ask why the good hard woking people of norfolk are over taxed, maybe someone should ask why norfolk is still in a race war? yes put a blind eye to the question, but i think the real voters might have somthing to say about all of them. yes i do back it all up jackstiles@verizon.net
Not so fast, incumbency is no reason to relect people that have not represented the homeowners of Norfolk well. I plan on digging deeper into Mr. Stiles to see if he would be more proactive in the fight against reckless tax and spending. The only way to bring change to Norfolk is to vote some of these imcumbents out and
Winn and Hester would be a good start.
