Too revealing for the store but OK for the newspaper?

Virginia Beach police seized two promotional photographs from a local Abercrombie & Fitch store and charged the store manager with obscenity charges, according to this story from PilotOnline. The funny part?

The story shows one of the two photos!

I can only assume that means that PilotOnline does not consider the photos obscene 😉

  1. A while ago, I was talking with a Muslim man whom I know, who works at a Kiosk at a local mall. He told me how offensive he found the giant images of underwear-clad women in the window of a nearby Victoria’s Secret store and that he hated to walk past the store on his way to work.

I told him that I thought that images of body parts blown all over the place by Muslim homicide bombers were obscene. I explained that the human body as depicted in the VS window display was nothing to be ashamed of and should be celebrated as a form of art.

He agreed on the point about the disgrace that the homicide bombers have brought on themselves and their families, but he just could not understand why Americans tolerated near naked photos of women in store windows. I tried to point out that we are a tolerant society and that many see such photos as those in the Victoria Secret as beautiful, but not salacious. I also showed him that there were at least six other ways for him to reach his Kiosk without passing by the Victoria Secret store.

Regarding the Abercrombie and Fiitch story: I think that there is nothing more beautiful than a well toned human body and their advertising celebrates the human form in beautiful, artistic ways. I can only hope that the case against the AF store manager is dropped before Virginia Beach is made out to be the laughing stock of the world.

Police agencies have been given too much power. Since 9-11, I have noticed that they seem to think that they can do just about anything to the citizens. We need to curtail police power and give them stern reminders that they are here to serve and protect, not to harass and torment the citizens.

I think the citizens allowed the police to get out of control after 9-11 because they feared that Osama the boogeyman would get them. Now, we are learning that it is difficult to reign in police power once it has gotten out of control. We need legislative action to repeal many of the ordinances with which police use to terrorize our people.

I do not solely blame police for this harassment of the Abercrombie and Fiitch store manager, but it is clear that ordinances that provide for such broad interpretation are truly at fault. By giving the police clear limits to what they can do to us, we will eventually have a safe, yet more free society that can be passed on to our children.

  2. I would hardly call the photos obscene, though when the picture started downloading and I saw the bare tops I thought ‘could they be streakers’? I think its good the paper ran it! Like the previous comment said, Va Beach will be the laughing stock of the world.
I believe this is the same town that arrested a young woman who wore a thong bikini at the beach some years ago. And of course its the home of Pat Robertson.
But closer to home we have the prosecution of an adult bookstore owner over in Staunton. The prosecutor has said they need to do this because we don’t have AIDS in Staunton ,unlike in Las Vegas or San Francisco. Why do we allow such buffoons to hold public office? I wonder how people in Stuanton who have AIDS or are HIV-positive feel to hear such ignorant commentary.

  3. Somebody help me please. I live approx. half way between the Va Beach loonies and the Lynchburg loonies.
    Heeeeeellllllllpppppp!
