Thank goodness for TiVo! I’m been buried in work and had planned to sit down and watch American Idol when it dawned on me that the debate on CNN was coming on at the same time. So I’m watching the debate and recording my favorite entertainment.

Audience seems to be equal numbers of Obama and Hillary supporters, based on applause.
On meeting with new Cuban leaders:
Clinton – need to show that they are making progress before meeting with the president.
Obama – we aren’t above anyone else, president should be more involved in diplomacy.
The economy:
Obama – do away with tax breaks for the rich, close corporate loopholes, $1,000 tax credit. Have to overcome the dominance of special interests.
Clinton – wealthy has had a president, time for there to be a president for the rest of America.
Immigration – stopping raids on undocumented immigrants?
Clinton – yes. Need comprehensive immigration reform. Crack down on employers, need path to legalization but not for criminals.
Obama – critical that we tone down the rhetoric when it comes to immigration. Crack down on employers but do in it such a way that it doesn’t discriminate against people with Hispanic surnames.
Reconsider border fence (both voted for it):
Clinton – Univ of TX at Brownsville would have part of its campus cut off. There may be places where a physical barrier is appropriate. Would review & listen to the people along the border and see what they think makes sense. Can use technology and personnel along the border instead of a physical barrier. Bush administration is doing it all wrong.
Obama – he agrees with Clinton. Bush administration is not good at listening. Deporting 12 million people is ridiculous. Have to deal with the problem of the influx of undocumented people. Pass the Dream Act – allow children access to higher education/
US becoming bilingual:
Clinton – we should try to learn another language but English should remain our common language. Shouldn’t make English the “official” language because we shouldn’t discriminate against people who don’t speak it. Wants English to be the common, unifying language.
Obama – important that everyone learn English but everyone should learn a second language.
Is Obama “all hat and no cattle”?
Clinton – we have a lot in common. But there are differences. I offer solutions, working to make a difference. There are differences between the records and accomplishments. Amused by the Obama supporter who couldn’t come up with Obama accomplishments. Words are important but actions speak louder than words.
Obama – also believes actions speak louder than words. Over the 20 year career, has acted. Fundamental difference in how change comes about. People are not delusional. If we don’t bring the country together, stop the special interests, we can’t change. If we can’t get beyond divisions, we will continue to see the gridlock.
Plagarism:
Obama – Duval is a national co-chair and gave him the line to use (“words matter”). What he has been talking about is not just hope and inspiration.
Clinton – if your candidacy is going to be about words, then they should be your own. Need to unite the country for a purpose around very specific goals. We got to not just bring the country together but have to work hard to overcome the entrenched positions.
I want to see a talk clock!
I took a break during that segment. Is is just me or do the questions seem designed to elicit controversy instead of reasoned debates? Seems like a lot of “gotcha” stuff here.
I think he’s hat AND Cattle. Both candidates are doing well and regardless of the outcome, we will have a Democratic President.
What an excellent closing statement on her part. Really well done.
Good closing argument on her part. Salvaged the debate from that “Xerox” line. She got booed hard for that.
Not booed hard, Dan. Just a little, although I don’t know why they booed at all. It was a great line.
She did a wonderful job on the closing statement.
wow, “it was a great line”?
I have just gone through just about every blog and you are the only person who I have seen thought that was a great line!
hey but different folks different . . . well you know
but, hmmmm, how bout this:
Bill ’92
“The hits that I took in this election are nothing compared to the hits the people of this state and this country have been taking for a long time.”
Hillary tonight: “You know, the hits I’ve taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country.

or how bout this:
Hillary tonight: “You know, whatever happens, we’re going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we’ll be able to say the same thing about the American people. And that’s what this election should be about.”
“What’s not at stake are any of us. All of us are going to be just fine no matter what happens in this election. But what’s at stake is whether America is going to be fine.”
