Moran’s humble roots

Moran, Warner, Webb, KaineHouse Democratic Caucus Chairman Brian Moran was the topic of an article in Monday’s News Virginian. In it, the as-yet-undeclared gubernatorial candidate discussed his humble roots.

“My parents were of very modest means,” said Moran, 48, who represents the city of Alexandria and part of Fairfax County. “My dad had any number of jobs and at one point was laid off and lost the family station wagon.”

One of seven children, including brother Jim, a U.S. congressman, Moran worked numerous odd jobs while earning degrees from Framingham State College in Massachusetts and Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C.

He bagged groceries, worked construction, tended bar and was a gas station attendant.

“It’s the American dream. You can apply yourself and work hard and be all you want to be,” he said.

And working hard is exactly what Moran has been doing. Since becoming Caucus chair in 2001, Democrats have picked up 12 seats in the House of Delegates. Moran has criss-crossed the state in support of candidates. This Sunday, Moran, along with Congressional candidates Leslie Byrne, Sam Rasoul and Drew Richardson, will be attending a fundraiser for the Staunton and Augusta County Democratic committees.

  1. Brian’s a great guy. Hard-working, diligent, industrious, but always the same guy, always approachable and decent. Ask his long time colleagues what they think of him.
