Norfolk candidates debate April 9

In just over a month, two of the eight Norfolk Council seats will be up for election. These two seats are for the superwards, each representing about half of the city. Incumbent Ward 6 councilman Barclay Winn is being challenged by Jack Stiles, a frequent commenter on this blog. Incumbent Ward 7 councilwoman Daun Hester is being challenged by Dwight McDowell. All four will be present at a debate sponsored by the Norfolk division of the Chamber of Commerce. The debate will be held Wednesday, April 9, at 6pm at the Attucks Theater. Doors open at 5:30pm. For more information, call (757) 664-2524.

I’d like to urge Norfolk voters to come out and hear the candidates speak. They will address a series of questions posed by the Chamber but will also answer questions from the audience. Assuming this follows the form of previous Chamber-sponsored debates, you will submit your questions on a card to be asked by the moderator.

I have already endorsed the incumbents, but make up your own minds by getting as much information about the candidates as possible. I’d love to see record-breaking turnout for this election, which really isn’t asking for much. In 2004, less than 6,000 people bothered to vote. If 16,000 people can sign a petition, surely as many – or more – can be bothered to vote. Don’t let the few decide for the many. Get informed, and go vote.
