Sen. Yvonne Miller (D-5th) hosted a reception this evening during which she presented ten resolutions of the General Assembly honoring local citizens for their contributions to our community. The event was held at The Attucks Theatre and was well attended – the crowd was overflowing – by family and friends of the honorees, all of whom died in 2007.
The honorees (including the Senate Joint Resolution):
- Rosa Bernice Cannon Boush, Evangelist (SJR11)
- Marilyn L. Jones, child advocate (SJR12)
- Sara Hamburg Tonelson, special education teacher (SJR13)
- William H. Wright, former head of NSU Department of Physical Education and assistant dean of the NSU School of Education (SJR14)
- Geraldine Evans Bond, civic leader (SJR15)
- Rev. Dr. Willie R. Ponds, Sr., minister and civic leader (SJR16)
- Dr. Charles E. Flowers, educator and assistant to the president at NSU (SJR20)
- Dr. Lorenzo Pharr Archer, physician (SJR21)
- Willie Etta Fayton, civic leader (SJR22)
- Herbert M. Collins, Sr., former Norfolk councilman (SJR23)
The families and friends of the honorees were gracious in receiving the resolutions and beaming with pride that their loved ones were so honored. This is one of the reasons why Sen. Miller remains such a beloved member of the community.
