Thursday’s ribbon-cutting at the newest Metropolitan Funeral Service facility in Berkley brought out politicians on both sides of the aisle and from throughout Hampton Roads to applaud the efforts of Del. Kenny Alexander in reinvesting his community. Governor Tim Kaine was the main speaker at the event along with Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim. Among those in attendance were Senators Yvonne Miller and Ralph Northam, Delegates Lionell Spruill, John Cosgrove, Johnny Joannou, Algie Howell, and Bobby Mathieson, Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf and Norfolk Councilman Barclay Winn. (I’m doing this from memory so if I missed anybody, I apologize.) Joining the group late (after being held up in the tunnel) was Delegate Brian Moran.
The overflow crowd gathered in the atrium of this fine facility prior to the start of the ceremony. Attendees were treated to beautiful harp music as they munched on great food and chatted with others. As large as the groups was, however, it was dwarfed by the size of the chapel.
This picture does not do justice to the actual size – there are about 10 rows behind me. Once the attendees gathered in the chapel, there was still plenty of room. I can see how this facility will easily double as a shelter.

After brief remarks by Alexander, Fraim and Kaine, the three were joined by Alexander’s wife and children for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting.
All in all, a great event. Kudos to Alexander for such a fine facility.
