American Idol Results 04/30/08: The Final Four

American Idol LogoThe music of Neil Diamond was featured last night. Perhaps I should have followed anonymous’ advice and rented Lost and Found 😦 If that weren’t bad enough, tonight’s opening medley can only be described as horrible. But watching AI is a little bit like watching a wreck – I just can’t help myself. This was supposed to be the best group yet. Well, they lied. You know, it’s one thing to have your own style that you adopt to various genres of music. It’s quite another to have no style and still try to sing different genres. It just doesn’t work. And not much has worked in recent weeks on AI.

Before the show got going, Ryan Seacrest made a rather vague statement about judge Paula Abdul and her being a member of the family. Seems that Paula’s flub last night – she critiqued both of Jason’s songs after he had only sung one – has tongues a-waggin’ about the show being fixed.

Called out first was Jason. He was, by far, the weakest performer last night. Despite that, there must be something that the voters see in him because he was declared safe.

Next up was David Archuleta, who was, in my opinion, the best performer last night. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he sang America. He, too, was declared safe.

After a quick break, the show went right back to the results. Rocker David Cook was called up. One thing I do like about this guy, who will probably win the competition, is that he stays true to who he is. A bit boring, but true.

This left the two women – Syesha and Brooke. Neither of them do a whole lot for me and it’s really a wonder why they have made it so far. Brooke was, once again, the VFW candidate this week.

Before we got to the final results, we had a little musical interlude courtesy of Natasha Bedingfield. I’m obviously getting old, as I’ve never heard of the woman. Compared to the AI contestants, she was wonderful. But that ain’t saying much. She had the crowd in stitches, though, when she went over to say hello to wonderkid Daivd Archuleta πŸ˜‰

I was hoping that they had killed the live phone call portion but that was not to be. And after that, we were “treated” to a performance by Neil Diamond. He sang a song called “Pretty Amazing.” How appropriate πŸ˜‰

Finally, we got to the results. Going home tonight was Brooke White. Like I said, eliminating either of them would have been fine with me.

  1. She had a single, “Unwritten,” that got some fairly decent radio play a year or two back which is also featured in a Pantene shampoo commercial (it’s the one that goes “feel the rain on your skin”).

If being in a shampoo commercial doesn’t make you famous, I don’t know what does. :p

(If she’d been in a Mac commercial I wouldn’t mean that sarcastically. Pretty much every song that has been on an iPod or Macbook commercial has pushed an unknown band into the mainstream, and it actually created the group Jet, which didn’t have an album out in the US before the silhouette iPod commercials inspired everyone to google the phrase “are you gonna be my girl?” Don’t get me started on Jet, though….)

  2. Well AI almost lost my viewing days last night. If David Cook would have been eliminated it would have been a travesty. David Archuleta is a good singer, however David Cook seems to be the only one on the show who knows anything about the intricate details in music. He knows how to arrange, produce, create and sing the heck out of almost any genre they have had him try. I have not got a clue why Jason is still there. I was just wondering Vivian if you had somthing against a rocker because David Cook is so far ahead of this class of singers, beside the other David that it isn’t even funny. even Simon earlier in the shows said if this was a strictly talent show David Cook would have one a long time ago. David Archuleta will probably win, but i know which one will have the longest and best career.

  3. Gene – did you read what I said? Let me repeat it:

One thing I do like about this guy, who will probably win the competition, is that he stays true to who he is. A bit boring, but true.

I’ve picked Cook to win. But that doesn’t mean I have to like the guy. I happen to not be a rock fan, that’s all. Besides, this is American Idol, not American Rock Idol.

Anon – for some reason, your comments are going to my spam filter. I’ll keep fishing them out πŸ™‚ And yes, I remember that commercial.
