Tuesday night’s show matched rocker David Cooke against wonderkid David Archuleta. Gotta admit that the opening with boxing announcer Michael Butler was pretty cool π
Sticking with the boxing theme, the two Davids squared off for three rounds of competition. Archuleta won the coin toss and elected to go second. In the first round, the songs were selected by Clive Davis. Davis chose U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” for Cooke and Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” for Archuleta. The contestants were helped out by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The two performances were adequate but both were lacking something. Maybe it was the size of the stage – and the crowd – but they both appeared a bit nervous. By a whisker, I gave round 1 to Archuleta (10-9).
Round two’s songs were drawn from the top 10 songs from the songwriter’s competition. This is where things got a bit interesting, in that no one was familiar with the songs and had anything to compare it to.
Cooke chose a song called “Dream Big.” This song fit Cooke perfectly. It rocked enough but still allowed his vocals to come thru.
Archuleta’s song was called “In This Moment.” As expected, it was a nice ballad. And, as expected, Archuleta did a decent job.
To be perfectly honest – I wouldn’t buy either of these records π¦ But then again, I doubt if I’m the target audience. I think round 2 was a draw (10-10).
In the final round, the contestants got to choose their own song. Cooke chose Collective Soul’s “The World I Know” while Archuleta chose “Imagine” by John Lennon, the former I had never heard before while the latter everyone knows π Cooke did a tremendous job on his choice. But he was no match for Archuleta, who demonstrated crazy vocal skills. Round 3 Archuleta scored a knockout! (For you non-boxing folks out there, that made it a 10-8 round.)
So on my scorecard, Archuleta wins 30-27. Now we’ll see what the voters think π
I think Archuleta will win the competition due to his performance tonight, but it’s David Cook who will actually have the better career. For me it’s almost as if Archuleta’s target fan base is the teenage girls who actually do most of the voting in the competition. Cook’s target audience, rock fans, probably aren’t doing much of the voting.
Simon was right on when he said that Archuleta seemed to come into tonight to win the competition, but I really think that’s because his career really could take off from winning this. While Cook would benefit from winning, I think he’s already guaranteed a career and was just having fun and performing songs he’d enjoy.
Archuleta should lose for choosing “Imagine.” It is possibly the worst song of 20th Century (and that’s saying something).
John Lennon is rolling in his grave right now. Archuleta destroyed the ultimate classic that it is. Anyone that thinks “Imagine” is the worst song of the 20th century has got a few screws loose. Of course I understand if one does not wish to see the world come together as one, that might destroy one’s power base. Back to the competition-I see Archuleta winning tonight but not because he won last night. He barekly won the 1st round, lost the second round, and totally screwed up Imagine. Archuleta will win because during the whole competition this year he never tookl chances, never changed any songs, and the teeny boppers and older populations are hooked on his lullabyes. David Cook, as was stated earlier should easily have the better career, but IDOL will never accapt a rocker to win this thing.
I THINK DAVID ARCHULETA SHOULD WIN!!!!!HES THE BEST HES ALL WAY ON HES A GAME AND STEPS UP WHEN HE NEEDS TO!!!!HE AWSOME…..THE BEST…I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS
I totally agree, Hannah. But I think you’d be more convincing if you just added a few more exclamation points. Just sayin’.
I am so glad Cook won. Here is my take on the season.
PS How HOT did Carrie Underwood look! I swear, she looks better every day!
You ruined it for all of us who haven’t seen it yet, Squeaks.
lawlz, just kiddng, this season was ruined a while back. π
