Delegate Lionell Spruill, one of Hillary Clinton’s staunchest supporters, has announced his support for the presumed Democratic nominee, Barack Obama.
“I held out until the end,” Spruill said. “I kept my promise.”
Spruill was with Clinton in New York Tuesday and was one of those with her onstage after her speech. He has worked tirelessly for her candidacy, traveling all over the country on her behalf.
He said he now offers the same type of support to Obama.
“I traveled all over the country for her,” he said. “I’d do the same for him.”
Spruill said unifying the party is the most important thing right now.
“We’ve got to win this thing in November,” Spruill said.
Also announcing his support for Obama today was Virginia Democratic Party Chairman C. Richard Cranwell. In a statement released earlier today:
“Sen. Obama has proven himself to be a leader who reminds us that there is more that binds us together as Americans than separates us; bringing us together to solve the very real problems we’re facing today.”
“The nation’s eyes will be on Virginia this year. The fact that he’s here just two days after becoming the Democratic nominee shows us how important the Commonwealth is to him. So I’m going to do everything I can to make sure Virginia is firmly in Obama’s column come November.
Cranwell had remained uncommitted throughout the primary season once his preferred candidate, John Edwards, dropped out of the race.
Cranwell was actually an Edwards supporter. He endorsed the same time Kaine endorsed Obama. In any case, both of these men are very principled Democrats. Spruill in particular should be applauded for the tireless activism he demonstrated in keeping his promise. I think it shows how seriously he took his endorsement of Hillary then as well as how seriously he takes his support of Obama now.
Thanks for that update. I had forgotten that Cranwell originally endorsed Edwards.
As a Hillary supporter I agree it is time to unity the party, especially here in Virginia where we need to focus on getting a Democratic Governor elected to redistrict in 2010. A national party fight will only trickle down to the state, and we don’t need that.
How hard will Del. Spruill work to make sure that no one in this country hangs anything naughty from his trailer hitch?
Wow Brian, are you one of those people who complain when legislators don’t listen to you and then complain when they do?? At least he was representing a constituent who asked him to do something about that……and took the heat for it. As a matter of fact Flordia did just pass legislation on that issue.
