I have confirmed from C. Richard Cranwell himself that he is considering a run for LG. That is all that the DPVA chairman is willing to say at this point.

This surprises me. I thought he’d be better suited to AG and it seems like it’d be the easiest General Election race; if you win the primary for the LG race, you’re still in all likelihood going to be facing a incumbent, whereas in the AG race you’ll be facing a relative unknown. Hmm.
There CAN be too many candidates running in a primary.
We did have four candidates running for LG in 2005. With Wagner likely to run and Bowerbank already declared, Cranwell would only make three.
silence – if Kaine is VP or leaves the governor’s mansion for a cabinet post, the LG spot is almost an open one. (Need to find out who would get elevated to LG in that scenario – would there be a special election?)
I don’t think Kaine’s going to be VP (I do think he’s qualified, though) and I doubt he’s going to leave office for a cabinet position short of something high-profile like AG or State. My completely speculatory guess would be something like a mid-term cabinet appointment or some sort of ambassadorship after 2009. Regardless, I’d be surprised if Cranwell really was gambling on that. He’s a smart man who ought to be planning for the worst case scenario, which means running against an incumbent.
Bryan, I see your point. I suppose it depends on how the primary would be conducted; Bolling will most likely be the incumbent, which changes the equation from 05…even oh so slightly.
silence – a gal can hope, right? 😉 But no, I don’t think Cranwell is thinking along those terms. He’s likely looking at Bolling and thinking he can beat him.
Vivian,
If there is a vacancy in the LG’s office, it is filled by special election. For example, when Reynolds died in 1971, there was a special election that was won by Henry Howell
Thanks, Tyler. I thought that might be the case.
