Cranwell: LG or AG?

Over the past few days, I’ve spent some time talking to folks about whether DPVA chairman C. Richard Cranwell is planning a run for Lieutenant Governor or Attorney General. While I have not yet gotten a response from Cranwell himself, my sources say that if he runs, it definitely will be for LG. The biggest reason is that the LG position will allow Cranwell to continue to practice law.

It seems that Cranwell is close to coming to a decision – I’m told that he’s “about 85%” sure that he will run.

Cranwell, 66, served in the General Assembly for 30 years, from 1972 to 2002, serving as House Majority Leader and Minority Leader. His departure from the House was due to redistricting. Should Cranwell enter the LG race, I suspect his long-term relationships with various members of the GA will result in more than a few backing off their endorsements of other candidates. While he may not be well known to those who don’t follow politics closely, his fundraising prowess and the fact that he will be able to campaign with local GA members by his side make him a formidable opponent.

  1. Go Dickie Go!! I would love to see him as LG and especially as Governor, the Republicans better hope they are not in control if Dickiie becomes Governor!

  2. LG seems like perfect job for Cranwell (at least in his opinion). He can still keep his day job and he must believe that it is the easier target regardless of Gov. Kaine’s future.
